Sunday Lesson

Sister Griffeth gave a great lesson Sunday from the October Conference issue.
She started the lesson by talking about her difficult week with sick kids.  She spent Tuesday visiting teaching then coming home after and reading her scriptures and saying a prayer after getting kids down for a nap and doing her normal duties around the home.  She wanted nothing more at this point then to sit down with a good book but knew she needed to work on her lesson for Sunday.  She thought to herself, "Why do I do these things?"  The answer came quickly to her mind, because she loves to have the spirit in her life and her home.
Sometimes we feel the spirit strong at church but get home and the day to day involvement and duties in our lives happen and we can temporarily put aside those feelings.  Our world is a checklist of things to do at times.  Keeping the Spirit with us at all times is not something we can check off.  We have to work at it all the time.
One comment shared was that when we are given the Gift of the Holy Ghost, we are asked to receive it.  We are supposed to be acting or living it at all times, not just when we need it or are in a difficult situation.
Sister Griffeth talked of her gratitude for the Priesthood, especially this week when her son was in need of a blessing.
Moral deterioration of the world has escalated.  How do we keep our families from falling in this trap?
Sister Griffeth shared her experience of growing up in Southern California.  she went to a very culturally diverse high school.  She walked through a metal detector every day.  When preparing this lesson she thought about the kind of music she listened to as a child and into adulthood.  Most of it was rap.  She and her sister would buy the clean version and she talked about how her husband hated her music.  She decided once she had her first child that she would not listen to that type of music anymore.
What are we doing in our families to make sure our kids are listening to good music or good tv shows?
Answers shared:  rule that parents had to check music before ordering from iTunes.  Have netflix set up to only show g or pg movies.  Turning radio off completely in the car, using that time to sing or talk with children.  In this digital age we can monitor completely what is bought or viewed.  Clear play is a DVD device that edits out anything that may not be appropriate for children.  Our homes should be a safe haven.  Sometimes rules can feel extreme but most importantly parents should have a united ground together.
Sister Griffeth talked about her parents being a great example of love in her home growing up.  She was not aware of any disagreements because they were always behind closed doors.  She is grateful her parents were such a great example of that.
How can we protect our children from the evils in this world?  Answers shared:
Educate and communicate.  They are their own people and have their own minds.  Constantly think...what is smart, what is out there and what is there to be aware of.
